This week I tested the Databricks Excel Add-in

This week I tested the Databricks Excel Add-in and I must say I’m a bit fighting with this one…

From one point of view, Data Democratization & bringing data to the people is the #1 requested feature (translated to can I have the data in Excel). It bring the data to the people and adds real value quick to you data platform.

But on the other hand, how do you protect your sensitive data from not leaving your platform. The more data you have, the more dangerous it becomes.

If you ask me, this is where proper architecture comes into place. A strong design with the right controls and monitoring allows you to do this as safe as possible. This is also where multiple teams and multiple vendors must work together to control the data, the moment your data leaves Databricks and is in Excel, the Microsoft tooling has to take over the control of the data and protect it. Luckily with Purview & Data Loss Prevention policies this is possible.
